Orientation is held several times per year for all NEW CIBU students. You are required to attend this informative meeting before attending your first classes.
Q: What is covered in orientation?
Information covered in the orientation includes: CIBU School Policies, classroom etiquette, student immigration issues, F-1 student responsibilities, student handbook, class schedules, student identification cards and admissions procedures.
Q: How can I request information and/or an application form for admission?
Application forms can be found on The Application Page. You may find helpful information regarding all the questions you have on these pages. Otherwise, please contact the school.
Q: What are the requirements for admission?
Official Transcripts: They must have the official seal of the institution from which it was issued. “Issued to student,” hand-carried transcripts or photocopies will not be accepted as official. Applicants submitting transcripts from institutions outside the United States should submit an explanation of the grading process, along with a certified translation of the transcript if it is not in English. Proof of Financial Responsibility: International students must submit an original or certified copy of a recent (within 90 days of matriculation) bank statement showing that the student has an account with sufficient funds to cover study at the California School of International Management. In addition, the Affidavit of Support Form must be completed by the student and sponsor (if applicable). Health Insurance: International (F-1 Visa) students are required to obtain basic health and medical insurance to protect themselves, and their dependents, if married, from unexpected expenses incurred due to medical needs or emergencies. Visas: Students are responsible for obtaining the necessary visas for travel to and study at CIBU. English Language Proficiency: Instruction will be in English language. Applicants whose preparatory education was principally in a language other than English must prove sufficient skills in English to be considered for admission. In cases where the student is not a native English speaker or his/her upper level degree was not earned at a school where English is spoken, both a written essay and interview (by phone or in person) will be used to assess the applicants English level, in addition to TOEFL or TWE test scores submitted. In most cases, applicants shall present a TOEFL (or equivalent test) minimum score of 550 paper based (PBT) or 79 internet based (iBT) for Graduates and 500 paper based (PBT), 65 internet based (iBT) for Undergraduates.
Q: Does CIBU offer any scholarships?
The school does not provide financial assistance; however, a very limited number of on-campus assistantships opportunities exist from time to time for Graduate students (MSIM, MBA and DBA). Such opportunities may allow partial tuition credit. Scholarships and students loans are not available through the school. Students may apply for on-campus assistantships when notices appear on School Bulletin Boards and through regular communication channels. Decisions are based on technical qualifications and experience.
Q: How many courses should I enroll in per quarter?
Students have the responsibility to maintain their F-1 student status at all times. CIBU’s requirements for students are 3 courses per quarter and students must be enrolled 3 quarters out of 4.
Q: Can I work while I’m studying at CIBU?
Unfortunately, international students are not allowed to work for payment outside of campus while studying in the U.S. Students may be eligible to work in non-paid positions through Internship placement.
Q: Are there required courses I must take?
Yes. Depending on your program of study you will be provided a schedule of the classes you need to enroll in and complete each academic quarter.
Q: Are textbooks required for courses offered at CIBU?
Yes. All students are required to purchase a textbook for each class. Students must have the textbook at the beginning of the class
Q: How do I know which textbook to purchase?
The required textbooks are listed on the schedule. Consult your class schedule for the current quarter you are enrolled to get the book information.
Q: What is the best way to order books?
A: The best way to purchase books is online. Oftentimes, retailers such as Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com offer free shipping, as well as the opportunity to purchase used texts at a discount. However, it is very important that students purchase the correct edition and ISBN of textbooks, and CIBU is not responsible for incorrect ordering by students.
Q: How many courses can a graduate student take per academic quarter?
Degree Students Master degree students will take three (3) courses per quarter [two or three (2 or 3) core courses or two core courses and one (1) elective course. Master degree students can be completed in 12 to 15 months. It is the responsibility of Master degree students to register for the required courses each academic quarter. DBA degree students may take two (2) core courses per quarter, but are advised to take three. Visiting Students (semester abroad) Masters degree students will take three (3) courses per quarter.
Q: Who do I see for advisement on program/course selection?
Students may set an appointment with the Director of Academic Administration.
Q: How do I pay for my classes?
1. Tuition and Fees payable to the California International Business University may be paid by credit card (Visa or MasterCard), personal check, Traveler’s Checks, money order or cashier’s check.
2.We have many cases of credit cards being declined. It could be for any number of reasons that have nothing to do with your credit. Unfortunately, we are not told why cards are declined.
3. If your card is declined, CIBU suggests you take it to one of the local banks where you can use your debit or credit card to get a cash advance or to purchase a cashier’s check. Union Bank (CIBU students may open an account at this bank for no charge); Bank of America and California Bank and Trust have locations within three blocks of CIBU.
4. You also should consider opening a local bank account and making your payment with a personal check.
