This past Sunday, a group of about 40 of our undergraduate students completed a week of planning and practice that culminated in a Flash Mob to raise awareness of the homeless issue in San Diego. The occasion for this “improvisational mobilization” was Global Youth Service Day and the location was San Diego’s second annual Servapalooza youth service celebration at Balboa Park. CIBU students designed, choreographed and performed an improvised dance in support of United Way’s Home Again Campaign which aims to create long term solutions to homelessness. The event attracted more that 2,000 volunteer youth and families. CIBU students joined fellow International students from UCSD who designed the initial concept. Our CIBU students choreographed and planned the musical and dance elements to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and the Soco Boys “Follow the Leader.” Combined, these students represented countries that included; Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, India, Japan, Korea, Spain, Taiwan and Turkey. They made their adopted home, San Diego, more conscious of its homeless by raising their voices, donating their time, and making something magical happen. It was a pleasure and a learning experience for me as it was for them. As Dean of Undergraduate Programs for CIBU, I am happy to have the opportunity to work with these fine young people who on this day achieved greatness through their passion, dedication and creative enthusiasm.
